Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee Replacement Surgery: Enhancing Precision and Outcomes

The knee is a crucial joint involved in walking, crouching, and standing. It relies on a coordinated system of bones, ligaments, cartilage, muscles, and nerves. When any of these components are affected by injury, arthritis, or other conditions, knee replacement surgery may be necessary.

Precision is vital in these procedures. The more accurate a surgeon’s measurement tools, the better they can plan and perform your surgery, ensuring proper alignment, balance, and fit of the knee implant.

Our Robotic Knee Replacement Technology assists surgeons in performing highly precise partial or total knee replacement surgeries. These innovative technologies consider each person’s unique anatomy for the best possible outcomes

What is Robotic Knee Replacement?

Robotic knee replacement at Radhai Hospital involves using advanced robotic technology to perform knee replacement surgery with greater precision. In this procedure, damaged knee tissue is removed and replaced with an artificial joint, guided by a robotic arm. This ensures better alignment and balance of the knee joint, particularly in complex cases.

How Do Robotic Knee Replacements Work?

  1. Pre-Surgery Planning: Specialized CAT scans create a detailed 3-D image of your knee joint, including the bone structure and surrounding tissues.
  2. Surgical Preparation: Tracking pins are used to confirm accurate information from the CAT scans.
  3. Precision Execution: The robotic arm assists the surgeon in making precise cuts and placing the implant, ensuring optimal alignment and fit.

Who is a Candidate for Robotic Knee Replacement?

If you are eligible for traditional knee replacement, you are likely a candidate for robotic-assisted surgery. This advanced option is especially beneficial for patients with:

  • Femur deformities due to injury
  • Complex joint degeneration
  • Previous surgical hardware

Discuss with your doctor at Radhai Hospital to determine if robotic knee replacement is the best option for you.

Advantages of Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery

  1. Enhanced Surgical Planning: 3-D imaging allows for precise planning and implant placement.
  2. Greater Precision: Robotic technology supports accurate tissue removal and implant positioning.
  3. Optimal Joint Alignment: Better alignment and positioning lead to a more natural-feeling joint and reduced wear on the new joint.

Traditional vs. Robotic Surgery for Knee Replacements

Rehabilitation Plan After Knee ReplacementRight After Surgery

Our main goal after your knee replacement is to help you regain your independence, get you home safely, and ensure you have support at home.

After the surgery, you’ll spend one to three hours in the recovery room. During this time, nurses will connect you to machines like pain pumps, drains, and urinary catheters, and closely monitor your vital signs.

Moving After Surgery

You will be encouraged to start moving as soon as it’s safe and you’re feeling up to it. Our recovery team will help you walk short distances with crutches or a walking frame. Starting to move early can help reduce complications during recovery.

Managing Pain

If you feel pain, we will use our special pain management system called the Radhai Multimodal Perioperative Pain Protocol. This system helps manage your pain after surgery to reduce the need for pain medications and narcotics.

Hospital Stay Duration

The length of your hospital stay depends on several factors your surgeon will discuss with you. Most patients stay one night and are discharged the next day. In some cases, you may be discharged on the same day if you’re in good health and have a reliable support system at home.

Preparing for Home and Rehab

On the day you go home, we will give you all the information and instructions you need for recovery, including:

  • Taking care of your incision
  • Medications
  • Follow-up visits
  • Restrictions (e.g., no driving, working, or showering)

Your therapist will make sure you know how to use your walker or crutches correctly. If we think an inpatient rehab center is best for you, a social worker will work with your insurance company to cover the stay.

If you’re going home, a hospital coordinator will arrange for physical and occupational therapy to start the day after you leave. The frequency and duration of therapy will depend on your needs. We work closely with Radhai Therapy and Fitness, which has locations in Philadelphia, the suburbs, and South Jersey.

Physical Therapy and Exercise

To get the most out of your new knee, include home exercises in your daily routine. Focus on bending and straightening your knee as much as possible. Avoid using weights with your legs or knees and don’t do resistance exercises on a bike, treadmill, or other gym equipment.
